Fivefold Attack Frazzles Fresno State

UNLV runs it winning streak to a 29-year high with Wednesday's win

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — It's OK to be different—that's the message the Lady Rebels wanted to promote for their Equality and Inclusion Game. UNLV relied on all its differences to carry on its historic winning streak.

Five Lady Rebels scored in double figures as UNLV (21-4 overall, 13-1 Mountain West) held off Fresno State (9-15, 5-8) 69-59 Wednesday night at the Cox Pavilion.

It was the team's 11th straight win, notching its longest streak since the 1992-93 season.

UNLV led wire-to-wire but Fresno State kept a grasp on the margin until the final minute. The Bulldogs cut the Lady Rebels' lead within one shot on 11 occasions but UNLV consistently surged ahead.

"We've been able to win in multiple different ways," UNLV head women's basketball coach Lindy La Rocque said. "A night like tonight just shows the balance that we're capable of."

Desi-Rae Young led UNLV with her ninth double-double of the season, counting 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Essence Booker scored 14 points, Alyssa Durazo-Frescas and Nneka Obiazor each had 12, and Justice Ethridge added 11.

"For us, the go-to player is the open player.

"Justice made a couple of huge plays and that freed up Frescas for a big 3. Obviously, Desi and Nneka were dominant down low, just being physical and drawing some fouls."

Fresno State joined the ranks of Mountain West teams stymied by UNLV's defense. The Lady Rebels have held four of their last five opponents to 60 or fewer points.

Haley Cavinder, the conference's scoring leader with 19.4 points per game, was limited to just nine as Ethridge forced three of the guard's six turnovers.

"Justice is definitely a one-of-a-kind talent," La Rocque said. "Her quickness, athleticism and speed—it's so disruptive.

"And she hates defense. She hates it, which is hilarious because she's so good at it. It tells you about her character and her commitment to the team. She's all in for whatever the teams needs. She's our defensive player of the year and I would put her at the top of the league."

UNLV defends the Thomas and Mack Center from San Jose State Saturday afternoon. Tip off is 1 p.m.

BE THE CHANGE: The Lady Rebels celebrated equality and inclusion through various means, none more present than the colorful, mismatched socks its players wore to represent the differences we all have.

TRUE BELIEVER: UNLV center Desi-Rae Young's 9-for-11 free throw performance was a career best. Young entered the game shooting 66 percent from the charity stripe. Young is the Mountain West leader in free throw attempts.

DOWN FOR THE COUNT: Young four field goal attempts were a season low and matched a career low.

FIVE FOR 10: Five Lady Rebels scored in double figures for just the second time this season. Six reached double figures in UNLV's 92-59 blowout of Southern Utah in its fourth game of the season on Nov. 20.

TRIPLE TRIPLES: Ethridge's three 3-point makes marked just the third time this season the senior guard has counted more than two from beyond the arc.

FINDERS KEEPERS: UNLV and Fresno State recorded nine turnovers apiece. It was both a season low for UNLV as a team and a season low for a UNLV opponent.

BOOKER FOR FREE: Essence Booker was perfect from the free throw line for the 16th game this season, hitting six of six attempts. Booker 92.6 percent free throw shooting ranks seventh among all NCAA Division I players. She has hit 76 of her last 78 free throws.
