Afanasyeva Named Swimmer of the Week

The super senior helped lead women's swimming past Grand Canyon to finish the regular season 7-0 in duals

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com)  – UNLV swimming's super senior Kate Afanasyeva has been named the Mountain West Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. This marks the second time Afanasyeva has received the honor - both this season and during her career - while it is the fourth time a Rebel women's team swimmer has garnered the recognition on the year.

A native of Gomel, Belarus, Afanasyeva helped lead the Rebels past Grand Canyon, 167-123, as they finished their 2021-22 dual slate unbeaten at 7-0. The Scarlet and Gray's backstroke specialist won the 100 back (55.51) for the fifth straight meet and seventh time this season. Additionally, she contributed to UNLV's 200 free relay (1:31.11) and 200 medley relay (1:42.64) victories.

NEXT UP: UNLV's women's squad now turns its attention to competing this week at the Mountain West Championships being held in College Station, Texas, Feb. 16-19. Next, the Scarlet and Gray men's team will make the trip to Houston for the WAC Championships taking place Feb. 23-26.
