LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team completed the wire-to-wire victory Tuesday at Spanish Trail Country Club, winning its home tournament, The Show, by 13 strokes at 4-under 860. The wind wreaked havoc on the final day of the event, but the Rebels weathered the storm to turn in the best team round of the day and finish as the lone team under par. UNLV had jumped to a five-shot lead after the first two rounds thanks to a 12-under 276 in the opening round Monday, which was tied for third-lowest single round score in program history.
"I'm excited for our team," said head coach
Amy Bush-Herzer. "We have a lot of new faces this year and after a great fall, to come out here and carry over the momentum and start the spring this way says a lot about this group."
The final tally of 4-under made it four straight tournament finishes at par or better, setting a new program record. That breaks the old mark of two consecutive, which happened twice, both under head coach
Amy Bush-Herzer in 2015-16 and 2016-17. The fourth finish at par or better also ties the record for most in a season, matching the 2015-16 squad.
This is the second time the Rebels have won their home spring tournament as they finished first in the inaugural Rebel Beach Invitational back in 2018, also at Spanish Trail. It also marks their third team title in their last four events dating back to the fall competition. The three team wins are the most since UNLV had four in 2017-18, which tied a program record set in 2003-04.
Freshman
Kendall Todd led all Rebels, taking second place at 2-under 214, her lowest 54-hole score of her young career. She was one of five Rebels who finished in the top-10. Junior
Nicole Lorup checked in one stroke behind Todd at 1-under 215 to take third, while freshman
Hina Matsui, an individual competitor, finished seventh at 2-over 218. Freshmen
Sydney Bryan and
Toa Yokoyama each carded a 4-over 220 to tie for ninth. Senior
Veronica Joels ended the event at 5-over 221 to tie for 13th, followed by freshmen
McKenzi Hall in a tie for 17th at 6-over 222. Sophomore
Gracie Olkowski rounded it out for the Rebels in a tie for 47th at 13-over 229.
In-state rival UNR was the team runner-up at 9-over 873, followed by Augusta in third at 17-over 881, Furman in fourth at 24-over 888 and Washington in fifth at 25-over 889. UNR's Leah John was the wire-to-wire individual medalist, finishing at 4-under 212 to edge out Todd by a pair of strokes. In fourth behind Todd and Lorup was Augusta's Chloe Holder at even for the tournament.
UP NEXT: UNLV will have a weekend off before heading to Peoria, Arizona for Wisconsin's Westbrook Invite, which will take place February 27-28
