LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) —
Mia Trejo doubled to the right-center wall for a walk-off RBI as UNLV topped Kansas City 4-3 to end a two-game slide.
UNLV's (6-2) senior first baseman batted 3-for-4 and knocked in
Janyssa Martin for the winning run to drop Kansas City (1-7) in Saturday's nightcap at the UNLV Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium.
The win exorcised demons that befell the Rebels' gloves after committing seven total defensive errors on Saturday.
"Defense is something we pride ourselves on," UNLV head coach Kirstie Fox said, "so I'm disappointed with how we played today. We're working through some things, some confidence issues, and letting our offense affect our defense a little bit.
"As far as these things happening, I'd rather have them happen now when we can work through them."Â
UNLV fell for a second straight day to Weber State, 6-1, in the afternoon opener.
UNLV and Kansas City meet up again Sunday at 11 a.m. for the final game of the UNLV Desert Classic tournament.
Game One: Weber State 6, UNLV 1
Weber State's McKell McCuistion and Chloe Camarero hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the second to put the Wildcats up 4-1 on the Rebels.
Amanda Sink (2-0) allowed just four hits and four walks as UNLV struggled to put runners on base.
UNLV finally broke through by loading the bases in the sixth, but Mariah Ramirez struck out two in relief to end the Rebels' hopes.
Game Two: UNLV 4, Kansas City 3
Jenny Bressler (4-0) emerged victorious after a strong series of innings shaken up by an atypical play in the top of the seventh inning.
Bressler struck out eight of the 31 batters faced, crossing 400 career strikeouts and moving into fifth on UNLV's career strikeouts list.
UNLV led 3-1 after
Janyssa Martin hit a solo home run in the third,
April Visser led off with a homer in the fourth and then doubled in the fifth to drive in
Mia Trejo.
Kansas City's Katelyn Garcia scored from third on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, crossing the plate and path of Bressler, who was covering, as the ball was thrown in. Bressler missed the toss and Kloe Hilbrenner, charging from second, raced in to even the score, 3-3.
