LAKE CHARLES, La. (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV softball swept the competition in the Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational, claiming wins against Manhattan and Memphis Sunday to record a 5-0 mark for the tournament.
Alanna Thiede threw a no-hitter as the Rebels run-ruled Manhattan 8-0 and center fielder
Janyssa Martin scored three runs in a 5-1 victory over Memphis.
"A lot of people stepped up and we hit well throughout the order," UNLV head
Kristie Fox said. "I'm really impressed with the way this team handled its first road trip from the time change to the weather and everything in between."
UNLV hosts Houston, New Mexico State and No. 5 Washington in the Boyd Gaming Classic at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas this weekend.Â
"Alanna's no-hitter gives us a lot of confidence in our rotation moving forward."
UNLV takes the field starting Friday, March 4, at 3 p.m. against defending WAC champion New Mexico State before facing Houston to close the day.
Game One: UNLV 8, Manhattan 0
April Visser slugged two home runs, driving in five runs to power UNLV's offense over Manhattan 8-0 Sunday morning.
Visser homered in the bottom of the third, plating
Hailey Schmaltz and
Lauryn Barker before bringing in Schmaltz home again in the fourth with a second blast to right center.
Siena Sandoval brought in UNLV's penultimate run with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk in the fifth before Schmaltz drilled a sacrifice fly to right, scoring
Sofia Morales to end the game by run rule.
Schmaltz hit 2-for-2, scoring two runs and batting in another in her first start of the season at catcher.
Alanna Thiede (W, 2-1) threw a no-hitter, striking out four batters and walking one.
Game Two: UNLV 5, Memphis 1

Ariana Martinez batted in two runs and
Janyssa Martin scored three as UNLV defeated Memphis 5-1 Sunday afternoon.Â

UNLV loaded the bases after
Alyssa Trejo singled up the middle and
Denise Armendariz was plunked by Memphis pitcher Mikayla Hosc. Martinez walked on five pitches, bringing home
Janyssa Martin for a 2-0 advantage.

Janyssa Martin on a groundout in the top of the fifth. Martinez snuck an RBI single through the right side of the infield.Â
In the bottom of the sixth, Kendall Lee sent a pitch back up the middle to plate Memphis pinch hitter Taylor Smrt for the Tigers' lone run.Â
Mia Trejo reclaimed the Rebels four-run advantage, bringing home
Janyssa Martin with a single to right center in the top of the seventh.
Jasmine Martin (W, 4-1) threw her second complete game of the tournament, allowing one earned run through 16 total innings.
