BERKELEY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team continued through its challenging nonconference schedule with a road match at No. 31 Cal on Monday and the result was a 7-0 defeat at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
The Rebels fell to 4-6 while the Golden Bears of the Pac-12 improved to 5-3.
The two teams staged an intense battle in doubles. At the top of the lineup,
Jackson Atherton and
Jordan Sauer lost a big lead against the nation's No. 12 duo, Yuta Kikuchi and Emil Overbeck, as Cal would eventually grab wins on court three and one to seal it while the action on court two was halted at 5-5.
In singles play, UNLV was extremely competitive at the top and bottom of the lineup but could only win one set on the day. That came when No. 31
Christopher Bulus took seven straight games to capture the first stanza before eventually falling in a super-tiebreaker to Kikuchi, 5-7 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).
UP NEXT: UNLV stays on the road with a neutral-site match vs. SMU on Thursday in San Diego.
