PHOENIX (UNLVRebels.com) – Behind 10 event wins, UNLV women's swimming and diving team topped Grand Canyon, 167-123, in its final dual meet of the 2021-22 season Saturday at the Fr. Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center. Meanwhile, the Rebel men's squad won eight of 14 swimming events but fell just short in a 150-147 defeat to the Lopes.
This marks the second straight season the Rebel women (7-0) finish unbeaten in duals while they also stretched their consecutive dual win streak to 15 dating back to the 2019-20 season.
REBELS OF THE MEET:
WOMEN
*Senior
Carissa Armijo finished a perfect 2-0 in her individual outing, taking first place in the 200 free (1:52.71) and 500 free (5:04.92).
*Sophomore
Blanka Bokros touched first in the 200 fly (2:01.49) to extend her winning streak in the event to four meets.
*Super senior Kate Afanasyeva grabbed her fifth straight win - and seventh overall this season - in the 100 back (55.51). She also contributed to the UNLV 'A' team's pair of first-place finishes in the 200 free relay (1:31.11) and 200 medley relay (1:42.64).
*Senior
Kristina Schneider won the 50 free (23.44), placed second in the 100 fly (56.71) and also assisted in the Scarlet and Gray's sweep of the 200 free and 200 medley relays.
MEN
*Junior
Panos Bolanos ended the regular season unbeaten at 8-0 in the 200 back with another win in the event on the day (1:47.86) to go along with his first-place finish in the 200 free (1:40.20).
*Junior Cam Castro posted a sweep of his individual events for the second straight meet, coming out on top in the 1650 free (15:42.18) and 500 free (4:38.91).
*Freshman Adnen Beji rode the wave of his Rebel teammates with his own sweep on the way to wins in the 100 breast (55.23) and 200 breast (2:03.22).
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
*In the 1650 free, senior
Julia Filippova gave the Rebels their first individual win of the meet as she reached the wall with a time of 16:57.95. Her victory was one of two top-3 finishes in the race, as her senior counterpart
Kacey Kiuchi finished third (17:58.52).
*Following Armijo's first-place finish in the 200 free, senior
Teneka Ash (1:52.96) and sophomore
Malia Fernandez (1:53.89) completed a Scarlet and Gray 1-2-3 event sweep as they finished second and third, respectively.
*Adding the women's seventh top-3 finish across their first three wins, senior
Lindsay Swail (57.80) added to Afanasyeva's first-place effort in the 100 back by reaching the wall in third place.
*Senior
Camila Quineche (2:08.60) took third place in the 200 fly to contribute yet another top-3 mark in a Scarlet and Gray event victory.
*Another Rebel event sweep came as sophomore
Calysta Bartlett's (5:11.50) second-place finish in the 500 free topped off Armijo's win.
*The ninth overall win and last swim victory of the day on the women's side was provided in the 100 fly by sophomore
Sarah Koopmans (55.88).
*Putting the cap on the team's win in the diving portion of the meet, sophomore
Vika Yanovska (279.23) turned in a first-place finish in the 3-meter.
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
*Kicking off the men's events, UNLV's 'A' team, consisting of senior
Richard Szilagyi, Beji, sophomore
George Ratiu and senior
Reece Hemmens, clocked a winning time of 1:29.21.
*The Scarlet and Gray men's squad landed another pair of top-3 finishers in the same race during the 1650 free and 200 free. Freshman
Andrew Navarro (15:53.21) tallied a third-place finish alongside Castro's win in the 1650 free while junior
Chris Mykkanen (1:41.26) touched third in the 200 free alongside Bolanos' victory.
*For the third time among the men's individual victories, the Rebels notched at leat two top-3 efforts during Beji's 100 breast first-place finish after
Sam Willstrop (57.00) came in third.
*Adding onto the list of first-place finishes, the Rebels' 'A' quartet of Ratiu, Szilagyi, junior
Steven Butler and
Reece Hemmens combined to swim a time of 1:21.39 for the final men's team win.
UP NEXT: The Rebels now will set their sights on defending their respective conference titles over the course of the next three weeks. First, UNLV's women's squad will head to College Station, Texas, in less than two weeks for the Mountain West Championships being held Feb. 16-19. Next, the Scarlet and Gray men's team will make the trip to Houston in under three weeks for the WAC Championships taking place Feb. 23-26.
