BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) — It just seems like it's on repeat—the Lady Rebels turn a slow start into a romp.
Desi-Rae Young totaled 14 points and nine rebounds to lead UNLV (19-4 overall, 11-1 Mountain West) over Boise State (8-15, 4-8) 69-52 Wednesday night at ExtraMile Arena.
Four Lady Rebels scored in double figures as
Nneka Obiazor counted 12 and
Essence Booker and
Alyssa Durazo-Frescas had 11 apiece.
Boise State had UNLV on the ropes with an 11-point lead in the first period and UNLV's leading scorer on the bench. But the Lady Rebels proved to carry the knockout punch, using a 17-0 scoring run in the third period to wrestle the lead away.
"Our whole post group played well," UNLV head women's basketball coach
Lindy La Rocque said. "Every one of them made a difference when it was their turn on the court."
Young was tagged with two fouls 2 ½ minutes into the contest and sat the remainder of the period. The Lady Rebels struggled to make shots but both teams turned the ball over six times.
Young returned to the court for the second period and UNLV started landing its power punches.
"We were playing really good defense, actually. So we took shot after shot and they might of had us on our heels once, but we had really good poise and never panicked."
Keyana Wilfred scored 4 as part of a 9-0 run that cut Boise State's lead to 2. UNLV held Boise State without a field goal for six minutes as the Broncos put just three through the hoop over the 10-minute span.
The Broncos led 25-22 at halftime.Â
Boise State's Mary Kay Naro converted a turnover into 2 and then bucketed another on a 2-on-1 fast break to increase the lead to 34-26.Â
It was the last time Boise State would carry the momentum. UNLV proved unstoppable for the rest of the game.
Kiara Jackson raced through the right side of the lane twice for floating layups to kick off a string of eight consecutive field goals by UNLV.
Boise State ended an 0-for-8 field goal drought late in the third, but Durazo-Frescas buried a 3 at the buzzer to lift UNLV up by 8.
Booker, held scoreless with 0-for-8 shooting through three periods, poured in 11 points in the fourth, including the game-winner from a turnover under the Boise State basket.
UNLV returns home for its next three games starting Saturday, Feb. 12, with a 2 p.m. tip-off against San Diego State at the Cox Pavilion.Â
RUN IDAHO: UNLV took the lead, and then some, with a 17-0 scoring run in the third period. It was UNLV's largest scoring run of the season. The Lady Rebels own a pair of 15-0 scoring runs from previous games this season.
20 YEARS IN THE MAKING: UNLV's 19-4 record is its best in 20 years. The 2001-02 Lady Rebels (23-8 overall, 9-5 Mountain West) reached 21 wins before suffering a fifth loss.
MARGIN CALL: UNLV handed Boise State its worst home defeat since the Broncos lost to Long Beach on Nov. 13, 2021. Boise State had not lost a conference home by more than six points prior to Wednesday.
NINE IS FINE: UNLV has won nine straight games. It's the program's longest such streak since winning 10 consecutive games in 2003-04.
CLEANING UP: UNLV swept the regular season series with Boise State for the first time since 2013.The Lady Rebels pulled ahead in the all-time series 13-12 after taking their third consecutive win against the Broncos.
HOT SHOT:
Essence Booker extended her consecutive free throw streak to 32 with a 5-for-5 performance tonight.
BORED: UNLV's nine-game streak of outrebounding its opponent ended. Boise State counted 32 rebounds to UNLV's 30.
PO-TA-TO, PO-TAT-O: UNLV was more adept at converting Boise State's turnovers into points. UNLV scored 18 points from 19 Boise State turnovers while the Broncos managed just 7 points from 16 UNLV turnovers.
