LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — When you absolutely, positively need a run, call in
Ariana Martinez.Â
The freshman pinch hit a two-run double to put UNLV (19-5) on top of UNR (7-18) as the Rebels captured a 5-1 victory Friday night at Eller Media Stadium.
UNR's Ellie Garcia allowed just three baserunners before UNLV opened the flood gates in the bottom of the fifth.
Garcia walked
Samantha Diaz,
Maddie Schmidt and
April Visser in succession. Then Martinez stepped in for
Sofia Morales at the plate and smacked a double into the left-center gap, scoring Diaz and Schmidt to take a 2-1 lead.
Denise Armendariz hit a sacrifice fly two at-bats later to bring home Visser.
In the sixth, Visser added a sacrifice fly and Morales plated Diaz, who reached on an error.Â
Alanna Thiede (W, 4-1) struck out a career-high seven strikeouts and
Jenny Bressler earned her second save of the season, striking out four in the final two innings.
The Rebels are back on the diamond Saturday at 3 p.m. for game two of the three game series.
