Rebels Save Best for Last Against Dixie State

UNLV takes Tuesday affair with sixth-inning rally

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV saved its best for last with a sixth-inning rally over Dixie State Tuesday night.

April Visser hit a two-RBI single to lead the Rebels (21-6) past the Trailblazers (11-16) 3-1 in the season's only scheduled mid-week game at Eller Media Stadium.

"Even when things aren't going our way," UNLV head softball coach Kristie Fox said, "this team is still going to give its all. I think a really positive thing I'm seeing this year is their character and their no-quit attitude."

A pitcher's duel was broken in the top of the fourth when DSU third baseman Laura Lockard hit a solo home run to center.

UNLV was 3-for-18 at the plate until it reached the sixth inning when the top third of the lineup batted itself aboard. Maddie Schmidt singled to left field, Sofia Morales raced out a bunt and the duo moved around on a wild pitch. No. 3-hitter Visser singled to right to drive in the pair.

"I like that even though we weren't playing well and our energy was low, our team was trying to manufacture it some way, both in the dugout and on the field. And they stuck together."

Visser scored on a passed ball after advancing to third from Mia Trejo's full-count walk and Denise Armendariz's sacrifice bunt. It was Visser's fifth straight game both scoring and batting in a run.

Alanna Thiede (W, 5-1) collected a career-high eight strikeouts through six innings.

Jenny Bressler earned her third save of the season. Bressler forced a double play and then struck out Ellie Evans to put a period on the evening.

UNLV remains on its home turf this weekend as it hosts San Diego for a three-game series. Friday's opener begins at 6 p.m. Saturday's first pitch is 3 p.m. and Sunday's game starts at noon.

"This next weekend against USD is really our last opportunity to clean things up as we head into some of the most important games of the year. So, I look forward to going to work these next couple days to prepare for USD and just to continue to see my team fight."
