LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) —
Jenny Bressler pitched her second complete-game shutout of the season as UNLV (15-4) rapped Houston (9-11) 5-0 Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.
Bressler (W, 9-2) retired the first 11 batters and 21 of 24 faced, allowing just two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
"Jenny's been really sharp," UNLV head softball coach
Kristie Fox said. "I think today was one of the best outings I've seen so far this year, but definitely typical Jenny. She seems to just get better the deeper we go."
Denise Armendariz blooped an RBI single into right field in the bottom of the third to score
Sofia Morales. Houston right fielder Amanda Carden mistimed her scoop and
Mia Trejo pounded on the error to race home from a bonus run. In the next at-bat,
Janyssa Martin slugged a fly ball to the left-center wall for a double, plating Armendariz for a 3-0 lead.
April Visser smacked her eighth home run of the season in the sixth to add two more to the tally.
"April is doing a really good job of staying focused in each at-bat and not letting things carry over.Â
"She struggled a little bit early on and then came up with a huge, huge two-out, two-run home run to give us a sizeable lead going into the seventh. She's just doing a good job of turning it over for us and getting some RBIs when we need them."
Houston's Kati Ray Brown aimed to spoil the shutout as the leadoff in the seventh, but her home run chance was robbed at the fence by right fielder Morales.
The UNLV freshman was 1-for-4 with a run scored Sunday and led the Rebels with nine hits over five games of the weekend's Boyd Gaming Classic.Â
"Sofia's taking advantage of her opportunities and making it hard to keep her out of the lineup. That's all we can ask for."
UNLV hits the road this week for Tuscon, Arizona, and four games at the Bear Down Fiesta. UNLV faces Marist on Friday, March 11, before playing Yale and host Arizona on Saturday. The Rebels finish Sunday with a rematch of Yale.
