LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV rallied to force extra innings but ultimately fell to No. 25 San Diego State in an 11-inning thriller Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.
SDSU (27-11 overall, 11-1 Mountain West) outlasted UNLV (28-9, 6-3) with a 7-6 victory.Â
April Visser hit two home runs, including a game-tying, three-RBI strike in the bottom of the seventh. Visser was 2-for-5 with five RBIs and a walk Sunday.
The Aztecs broke through in the fourth extra frame when Alexa Schultz snuck a two-out single just out of reach of third baseman
Siena Sandoval for a 7-5 lead.
UNLV loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th, but were only able to plate one runner before the Aztecs escaped.
"We put ourselves in good situations, we battled," UNLV head softball coach
Kristie Fox said. "We still have some things we need to be able to work through.Â
"Overall, I like our competitive nature. We've faced two top-25 teams the last two weekends and won four of the six games."
Maggie Balint, who shut out the Rebels on Friday, kept UNLV at bay for four innings but started to show wear with a four-pitch walk to
Alyssa Trejo in the fifth. Down 3-0, Visser homered off Balint to end UNLV's 0-for-4 streak with runners on base and put the Rebels within one run.
SDSU added a single run in each the fifth and sixth, looking strong enough to take a victory in regulation. But Balint walked Sandoval on four pitches to lead off the bottom of the seventh and
Alyssa Trejo knocked an 0-2 pitch into an infield hit that gave the Rebels life. In the next at-bat, Visser slugged her first offering into a frozen rope over the right-field fence.
SDSU's victory elevated the Aztecs to first in the conference standings while UNLV remained third.Â
UNLV has a short rest before heading to San Jose State for a three-game series starting Thursday night.
"I think a lot of different people stepped up when their name was called. We've continued to have each other's backs and supported each other.
"It's a short week, so we've got to recover and handle the games in front of us from here on out."
