PHOENIX, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf sophomore
Caden Fioroni put a bow on top of his outstanding first regular season as a Rebel, shooting a career single-round low of 8-under 63 in the final round of Arizona State's Thunderbird Collegiate Saturday. The San Diego, California, native sank six birdies and one eagle in a bogey-free round at Papago Golf Course (Par 71 7,317 yards), at one point surging into a tie atop the leaderboard before finishing in a tie for second at 12-under 201. The 63 is tied for second lowest single-round score in program history. It was Fioroni's highest finish of the year, marking his fifth top-15 finish and third top-10 finish.
Fioroni's performance helped the Rebels close out the regular season strong, as the team's final-round 13-under was the second-best round of the day. UNLV had entered the day in 12th and jumped up five spots to finish in a tie for seventh at 5-under 847. Fioroni wasn't the only Rebel with a stellar final round as junior
George Leigh carded a 6-under 65 Saturday, which matched his career-low of 66. Leigh ended the tournament in a tie for 32nd at 1-over. Freshman
Aaron Jarvis and sophomore
Ben Sawaia finished tied for 70th and 72nd at 8-over and 9-over, respectively. Freshman
Tommy Kimmel rounded it out for the Rebels in a tie for 82nd at 13-over.
Top-ranked Oklahoma used a 14-under day to surpass day one leader and host Arizona State, taking the team title at 31-under. The No. 4 Sun Devils took second at 26-under, followed by No. 7 Texas Tech in third at 22-under, No. 4 Oklahoma State in fourth at 16-under and No. 5 North Carolina in fifth at 12-under. Arizona State's James Leow, playing as an individual, shot a final-round 66 to take medalist honors at 14-under, while Fioroni and New Mexico's Bastien Amat shared runner-up honors at 12-under.
UP NEXT: The Rebels will head to Washington at the end of the month for the 2022 Mountain West Championship, which takes place April 29 - May 1 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton.
