LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Pushed to an evening start because of area winds, the UNLV and Air Force men's tennis teams turned in a wild thriller that saw the home team come up just short on Senior Night, 4-3, Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels closed their home schedule by dropping to 12-13 overall and 1-4 in the Mountain West while the Falcons improved to 14-8 and 2-3.
Air Force used a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), at the top spot to earn the doubles point after the teams split the other two matches. Turns out -- it would be the first of five tiebreakers that the Falcons would win on the night.
The hosts rallied to take a 2-1 lead by gaining quick straight-setters in singles. Conference MVP candidate
Christopher Bulus, ranked 78
th in the nation, rolled past Robert Baylon, 6-2, 6-3, at the top position while
Anton Ornberg downed Brian Garcia, 6-4, 6-2, on court six.
The Rebels would eventually lead 3-2 after
Milos Dabic got by Nick Vroman, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, at the fourth position. The Falcons, however, won a double-tiebreak match at No. 5 and then Jonathan Mascagni outlasted
Jordan Sauer, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) on court two in the clincher under the lights.
It marked a disappointing ending to a night that saw five Rebel seniors honored before first serve – Bulus, Sauer,
Zac Brodney,
Zach Garner and
Tom Ciszewski.
UP NEXT: UNLV concludes the regular season by traveling to Reno to take on UNR Thursday at 1 p.m.
