CHANDLER, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team carded its lowest team score of the 2021-22 campaign, shooting an 18-under 846 to finish in fifth at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic Tuesday. The Rebels shot a final round of 8-under 280 at Whirlwind Golf Club (Par 72 7,334 yards), concluding the tournament with three straight rounds under par.

Sophomore Caden Fioroni turned in a career-best tournament score as a Rebel, finishing in a tie for seventh at 10-under 206. The San Diego, California, native shot rounds of 69, 68 and 69, sinking 16 birdies and one eagle over the 54 holes. The tie for seventh was also the highest finish for Fioroni, who transferred to UNLV from Pepperdine prior to the season, and marked his second top 10 finish of the year. Fioroni's previous career best in finish and score was a tie for 10th at 8-under at UNLV's home tournament, the Southern Highlands Collegiate, at the end of February.

After a first round 78, sophomore Ben Sawaia bounced back in a big way, shooting a career-low single-round score in the second round - a 6-under 66 - followed by a 2-under 70 to finish in a tie for 26th at 2-under 214. The Las Vegas native sank seven birdies and an eagle during his surging second round. Senior Jack Kozlowski and junior George Leigh each shot a 2-over 218 at the event to finish tied for 58th, while senior J.J. Gresco came in one shot behind them at 3-over 219 to tie for 65th.

San Diego State ran away with the team title, shooting a 39-under 825 to beat second-place Long Beach State by 13 strokes. Colorado State and UNR finished in a tie for third at 23-under, while UNLV and Fresno State rounded out the top six at 18-under and 14-under, respectively. LBSU's Isaac Rodea was the wire-to-wire winner, edging out CSU's Connor Jones and SDSU's Steve Sugimoto and Zihao Jun by one shot to take medalist honors at 13-under 203. Two players - LMU's Riley Lewis and Iowa State's Lachlan Barker - tied for fifth at 11-under, while UNR's Tyler Schafer and San Diego State's Puwit Anupansuebsai tied with Fioroni at 10-under.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will be back at it next week for their final regular season tournament, returning to the Phoenix area for Arizona State's The Thunderbird tournament April 15-16.
