Diaz, Trejo Power Rebels Past Rutgers

UNLV continues in the NISC Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com)Mia Trejo and Samantha Diaz homered to power the Rebels past Rutgers Monday in the National Invitational Softball Championship.

UNLV (40-14) eliminated Rutgers from the tournament with a 5-1 victory and will face the winner of Monday afternoon's matchup between UC San Diego and Tarleton State Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT.

Trejo smashed a 2-2 offering over the 14'er in left field to give the Rebels an early 2-0 advantage. UNLV doubled the lead after Samantha Diaz led off the second with a solo shot and April Visser drove a triple into the right field gap to score Lauryn Barker.

Rutgers moved Maddie Lawson around the bases for a run in the top of the fifth, but the Rebels reclaimed the gap in the bottom frame when Maddie Schmidt scored from third on a wild pitch.

Jenny Bressler (W, 27-7) shrugged off a 13-minute rain delay in the first inning to strike out seven batters for her 17th complete game of the season. It was her 11th win in her last 12 decisions.

Bressler is seven strikeouts shy of UNLV's single-season record (223; Lori Harrigan, 1991).

UNLV softball reached the 40-win benchmark for the fifth time in its 41-year history, and first time since 2005.
