FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV took runner-up honors at the National Invitational Softball Championship on Thursday.
The Rebels fell to Baylor 4-0 in the championship game, ending the season with a 43-15 overall record. The record is the program's best by total victories since 2005 and the best winning percentage since 1995.
Baylor opened the game batting six straight grounders. Four snuck through the middle of the infield, allowing the Bears to take a 2-0 lead.Â
Baylor's Josie Bower added the final pair of runs with a two-RBI double in the top of the fifth.
The Rebels recorded their first hit on offense in the bottom of the fifth when
Samantha Diaz singled into right field. But UNLV couldn't take advantage of the opportunity.Â
Jenny Bressler broke UNLV's single-season strikeouts record with two Ks in the fifth inning. Bressler's final total reached 225, surpassing the 223 three-time Olympic champion Lori Harrigan set in 1991.
Bressler,
Denise Armendariz and
Mia Trejo were named to the NISC All-Tournament Team.
It was the Rebels' first postseason appearance since competing in the NISC in 2018.
