LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) —
Jenny Bressler tossed her ninth complete-game shutout of the season as the Rebels outlasted the Rams Friday night.
UNLV (36-11 overall, 14-5 Mountain West) beat Colorado State (17-24, 8-11) 2-0 in the first game of its final home series.
Bressler struck out nine batters and walked just two in her second straight shutout appearance, battling near triple-digit heat and winds gusting out of the ballpark.
"She's all grit. She just battles through it," UNLV head coach
Kristie Fox said. "We throw her a lot of innings and she's able to stay healthy, compete and pitch when she's tired. That's what makes her special."
Freshman
Ariana Martinez led off the second inning with a solo home run and scored on
Jasmine Martin's pinch-hit appearance in the fourth to count the game's only runs.
"Having a freshman who's been having great at-bats has been wonderful for our team. And, Jasmine, who's a sophomore stepped in for a critical RBI. I think it speaks to the future of the program.
"We played really good defense. I want to see us get some better at-bats tomorrow but, overall, it's a win."
UNLV and Colorado State meet back at Eller Media Stadium for game two of the three-game series Saturday at 3 p.m.
