LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Colorado State used two home runs to power past UNLV, 12-4, Saturday afternoon to set up a rubber match for the Rebels' home finale.
Swirling 20 mph winds wreaked havoc on the defenses. CSU's Danielle Serna drove in a run in the first after dropping a fly ball in shallow left field, just beyond the reach of shortstop
Samantha Diaz. In the second, Kaitlyn Cook's line drive carried just over the left-field wall for a two-RBI homer.
Colorado State (18-24 overall, 9-11 Mountain West) raced to a 6-0 lead before UNLV (36-12, 14-6) could get its offense going.
UNLV's
Janyssa Martin made her first plate appearance since March 22 (20 games) with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth that brought the Rebels' first run across.
Alyssa Trejo followed with an RBI fielder's choice.
The slight rally hopes sank in the next frame as Peyton Allen blasted a 3-RBI home run over deep center for a 9-2 advantage.
The Rams scored three runs again in the seventh inning.
UNLV third baseman
Lauryn Barker hit her fifth moon shot of the season in the sixth, scoring
Maddie Schmidt.
Colorado State's 12 runs were the most scored against UNLV this year.
The Rebels and Rams decide the series Sunday at noon. UNLV will honor its graduating class—Diaz,
Siena Sandoval and
Mia Trejo. The three players' mothers will throw the ceremonial first pitches and the trio will be recognized in a postgame ceremony.
