Seniors Send Off Rams in Home Finale

Diaz, Trejo drive in five runs in home finale

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) Mia Trejo opened with a three-RBI home run and Samantha Diaz closed with a two-RBI double in the duo's final game at Eller Media Stadium as the Rebels cruised to victory Sunday.

UNLV (37-12 overall, 15-6 Mountain West) thumped Colorado State (18-25, 9-12) 8-1 in its home finale. The Rebels captured their sixth of seven conference series claims with one weekend remaining in the regular season.

"After yesterday's loss, we talked about adversity, our true character and how this program is about how we bounce back," UNLV head softball coach Kristie Fox said. "How this team bounced back, came out and fought today, and got the W is really indicative of those seniors who have pretty much been with me here the whole time building the culture."

April Visser and Sofia Morales each had singles in the bottom of the first in front of Trejo, who smashed a full-count pitch over left field to give the Rebels a 3-0 advantage.

Trejo moved to second all-time at UNLV for career RBIs. She sits one behind Kim Rondina, who batted in 171 runs between 1994 and 1997.

Diaz slapped her first offering of the sixth inning to the right-field wall for a double that scored Janyssa Martin and Morales.

"I'm just really happy and proud they've done such a great job for themselves and the other players, and how close the team feels to them."

Colorado State took back one in the top of the second as Peyton Allen scored an unearned run after a throwing error allowed her to reach home from second on Brooke Bohlender's single to short.

But it would be their only time a Ram crossed the plate as Jenny Bressler (W, 24-6) dominated in the circle once again, collecting 10 strikeouts without allowing a walk.

Ariana Martinez knocked in two, two-out RBIs, plating Morales in the second and Julia Vollmer in the fourth.

UNLV honored its graduating class—Diaz, Siena Sandoval and Trejo—in a postgame ceremony.

"I'm glad they could get the win today and they will be greatly missed," Fox said.

The Rebels visit Fresno State next weekend to conclude their regular season.
