FRESNO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — Freshman
Ariana Martinez batted in two runs as the Rebels took game one against Fresno State Thursday night.
UNLV (38-12 overall, 16-6- Mountain West) topped Fresno State (18-35, 9-13) 4-1 at Margie Wright Diamond. The Rebels rallied after surrendering a leadoff run to the Bulldogs in the first.
In the third, Martinez drove in
Sofia Morales with an RBI single that hopped out of reach of the first baseman.
Maddie Schmidt led off the fourth with a single to left and raced home when
Samantha Diaz smacked her first pitch down the left-field line for an RBI double.
The UNLV defense remained stout after giving up the early run. Diaz, second baseman
April Visser and
Mia Trejo at first turned two double plays.
Jenny Bressler (W, 25-6) struck out five batters and walked just two in her 16th complete game of the season.
Martinez and
Denise Armendariz added insurance in the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles that brought in baserunners.
The Rebels' current five-game winning streak at Fresno State's home ballpark is the longest such streak in UNLV's history.
UNLV and Fresno State play game two of the three-game series Friday at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network, https://theMW.com/watch.
