LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams have added a 19-member signing class for the upcoming 2022-23 season, head coach
Ben Loorz announced on Thursday.
"We're excited to welcome the newest members of the Rebel swimming and diving family," said Loorz. "Our staff is looking forward to integrating this new class. It's full of a lot of talent and personality that I believe will help us pursue our goals of winning championships and graduating high achievers.
"With a class this large, there is no doubt their presence will be felt. The program has a lot of momentum already, but, even so, this new group of Rebels is expected to make cultural and competitive contributions to the team atmosphere right away."
On the women's side, the Rebels bolster their roster with a 12-member class that features Polish standout Marta Klimek (Gorzyczki, Poland), who competed at the European Championships in Rome, Italy, during the summer.
The class mainly consists of freestyle specialists, with eight swimmers specializing across the sprint, mid-distance and distance spectrum. That list includes Las Vegas native Hannah Jones, who won a state championship in the 500 free. She is joined by the freestyle duo from Seattle comprising free and backstroke specialist Averi Webb - a state champion in the 100 free - and Erika Carlson, who placed second in the 500 free at the state meet. Rounding out this group are the North Carolina tandem of sprinter Kyra Tonsil (Huntersville, N.C.) and USA Futures Championship qualifier Ashley Hughes (Cary, N.C.), Kayleigh Lovell (Girard, Ill.) from Illinois and California native Chloe Wendlandt (Aliso Viejo, Calif.).
Topping off the Scarlet & Gray women's squad newcomers are transfer butterfly/IM swimmer Madison Petschauer (Cary, N.C.), backstroke and butterfly specialist Elena Tanaka (Honolulu, Hawaii), breaststroke swimmer Jillian Moses (Boise, Idaho) and backstroke specialist Scarlett Cao (Shanghai, China).
The Rebel men bring in seven newcomers, spearheaded by another Polish signee in Krzysztof Matuszewski (Bydgoszcz, Poland) and Oregon native Charley Page-Jones (Eugene, Ore.). Matuszewski most recently represented the Poland national team at the European Junior Championships, while Page-Jones is coming off a summer in which he competed at U.S. Junior Nationals.
A versatile group, the remainder of the Scarlet & Gray men's newcomer list contains additional talent from the western U.S. - including Arizona, California and Nevada - and another European standout. Among that group are in-state products in butterfly and breaststroke swimmer Ian Belflower (Reno, Nev.) along with backstroke and distance specialist Hilton Aitken (Blue Diamond, Nev.), who also swam at the USA Futures Championship. Transfer sprint freestyler Lucas Esenwein (Ripon, Calif.), Hungarian freestyle specialist Zsolt Szodi (Budapest, Hungary) and Colby Raffel (Phoenix, Ariz.) - an Arizona state champion in the 200 fly and runner-up in the 200 IM - cap the list of newcomers.
