LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Senior
Mimi Mendoza scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to lift UNLV women's soccer (2-5) to a 1-0 win over Idaho State (1-4-2) at Peter Johann Memorial Field Sunday afternoon.
"What Mimi did today is what she's capable of doing constantly... so we're excited she had that explosive moment today," said head coach
Jenny Ruiz-Williams. "We've been talking a lot about playing with heart and that's my favorite part about today. These women were relentless, every single one of them, so this win feels good."
Mendoza's heroics came on her first career goal as sophomore
Viviana Cera assisted with a long pass down the left side after winning the ball off a Bengal free kick. The veteran midfielder then dashed toward the center of the box, where she sent the ball into the right side of the net to help the Rebels break the scoreless tie.
On the defensive side, the Rebels notched their second shutout of the season behind sophomore
Riley Liebsack's sixth career clean sheet. The Scarlet & Gray's standout keeper finished with five saves, parrying all five Bengal shots on goal.
STAT OF THE GAME: In the shots department, UNLV's attack constantly pressured the Idaho State defense with eight shots in the second half en route to a 15-11 shots and 9-5 shots-on-goal advantage.
