LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) —
Daniel Rojas' 51st-minute putback closed a second-half rally as UNLV and Sacramento State played to a 2-2 draw Sunday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
"We responded well to adversity," UNLV head coach
BJ Craig said. "That's a sign of a team that's growing and maturing."
UNLV (1-3-3) fell behind 2-0 to Sacramento State (5-1-2), who are unbeaten in their last seven games, before getting a shot on goal.Â
Sacramento State's Genaro Alfaro (20') and Michael Gonazlez (35') each scored goals to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
"We can't start games like that, but I'm proud of how we finished."
In the 42nd minute, UNLV reserve winger
Michael Vogel drew a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Mac Learned blocked Vogel's shot but the Rebel was first to the rebound and sent it back over the line.
Rojas bounded into a deflected cross and punted the ball low and left past the keeper for the equalizer.
The physicality then amped up with both teams eyeing a straight-up victory. Seven cautions and 16 fouls were distributed among the two squads over the final 40 minutes.
Romain Heck, making his first start as the Rebels' goalkeeper, made four of his six saves in the second half.Â
UNLV travels to play the University of San Diego on Thursday, Sept. 21, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
