Toreros Fashion Late Escape In 2-2 Draw

UNLV takes three-game unbeaten streak into conference play next week

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — An 88th-minute header by San Diego's Trevor Dillon helped the Toreros escape from the Rebels with their home unbeaten streak intact.

UNLV (1-3-4) and San Diego (1-3-5) played to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night at Torero Stadium.

"We're still learning how to win. How to finish games is a lesson for us still, " UNLV head coach BJ Craig said, "but, it's not for a lack of effort."

Josh Martinez's free kick arced perfectly inside the box for Dillon, who deflected the ball high and left beyond the reach of UNLV goalkeeper Andrew Sway.

Hayden Prasad needed just three minutes to put UNLV on the scoreboard. Making his second start of the season at center forward, Prasad intercepted a sloppy touch in the offensive midfield and fired a right-footed placekick from 33 yards out into the top left of the net.

Three minutes later, San Diego covered when Simon Duus Muller headed a corner kick into the goal to even the score at one apiece.

Sway faced 20 shots and made four saves, including two during a four-shot volley in the 29th minute that the Rebels converted into a score. Prasad punched the outlet forward to Skyler Goo, who dished to Gabe Sanchez for a right-footed strike that stoned USD's defense.

UNLV then absorbed USD's attack for the next 59 minutes before the Toreros finally struck on-target.

The Rebels nearly sealed the victory in the 81st minute. Allan Cuartas' header clanged the bottom of the crossbar before it was swatted away by USD goalie Jason Dubrovich.

San Diego remains undefeated at home this season while UNLV extends its unbeaten streak to three games.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to train. We've played two games a week and we've had try to learn on the fly in games or on video. It will be great for this team to have this time to put things together on the practice field."

The Rebels return to Las Vegas to begin conference play at home against Air Force on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff for the WAC opener is 11:30 a.m. at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
