BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team (2-6-1, 0-0-1) held Mountain West scoring leader Boise State (4-2-4, 0-0-1) in check as they played to a scoreless draw, 0-0, in Thursday afternoon's conference opener at the Boas Soccer Complex.
The Rebels' defensive line withstood a late Bronco rally, which included a pair of chances during the final minute of play. With 47 seconds left on the game clock, Boise State sent a free kick into the box to Bronco junior Jocelyn Stephens, whose shot missed to the right and led to another futile attempt to score on the ensuing corner.
Along with their stalwart defending, the Scarlet & Gray offense itself saw a pair of close chances in the waning moments of the game to nearly escape with a win. In the 76th minute, freshman
Mallie Ramirez launched a shot from outside the left corner of the 18 that was diverted on a diving save by Boise State goalkeeper Genevieve Crenshaw. The Rebels had one last attempt with five seconds remaining on senior
Mimi Mendoza's shot from the right corner above the box that rolled into the arms of a waiting Crenshaw at the final whistle.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Riley Liebsack picked up her seventh career shutout, leading UNLV's defense with three saves.
In the shot battle, the Scarlet & Gray held an overall 13-12 advantage for the game and finished even with the Broncos at 3-3 for shots on goal.
STAT OF THE GAME: The shutout marked the first clean sheet by the Rebels as a visitor to Boise State in program history.
