LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team (1-4) topped Eastern Washington (1-3-2), 2-0, for its first win of the season Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
"I think Eastern Washington's a great team, but the credit goes to our group of players who impacted this game on the field and gave their voice and energy throughout training [this week]," said Ruiz-Williams. "This whole team has worked so hard. They've been battling through adversity and really showing the Rebel spirit, so I'm very proud of them. Something we really worked on this week was creating more quality chances in the attacking third and being excellent in transition and they did just that today."
Wasting little time in scoring, the Rebels found the back of the net twice in the first half on a 13th-minute strike by senior captain
Izzy Perez and a 44th-minute tap-in by
Heather Mitchell. Perez's score came off an assist from freshman
Cadence Whitley, who sent a nice volley into the box from the right side of the box. Mitchell, who netted her first career goal, hit the back of the net after sophomore
Kennedi Schmidt's shot ricocheted off EWU goalkeeper Kamryn Willoughby's outstretched glove before making its way toward the left post for the second Scarlet & Gray score.
Anchoring the Scarlet & Gray defensive box, sophomore
Riley Liebsack also picked up her first win on the year behind her fifth career clean sheet and five saves in the match.
"It feels really good to get our first shutout and win," said Liebsack. "The team really helped out. Getting those two goals helped the defense to put us at ease and they gave us a little bit of comfort. The defensive line did a really good job and we dominated as a whole team defending."
The Rebels kept their foot on the pedal in the attack throughout the match with 16 total shots for the second straight game, while going on to win the shots-on-goal matchup vs. the Eagles, 11-5.
UP NEXT: UNLV will remain home this week for a pair of matches at Peter Johann Memorial Field on Thursday, Sept. 8, vs. Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. PT and Idaho State on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. PT.
