Booker Slams The Door on Colorado State

UNLV remains undefeated in the Mountain West after shutting down CSU, 63-58

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) — The Lady Rebels were willing to give up a little to take a lot.

UNLV (19-2 overall, 9-0 Mountain West) shut down Colorado State's (13-6, 6-2) league-leading offense and walked away with a 63-58 victory at Moby Arena Saturday. It was UNLV's 10th straight win and a declaration that the Lady Rebels plan to keep their perch atop the Mountain West.

"Coming into the game we wanted to play better defense," UNLV Head Coach Lindy La Rocque said. "And, offensively, they clogged the paint on us to force us to do some different things. It was just a little bit more low scoring than I'm sure everyone expected."

UNLV and Colorado State played to overtime in a 91-88 battle in their first conference meeting back in December. McKenna Hofschild bagged 37 points in the Dec. 31 matchup, scoring 16 points at the free-throw line.

On Saturday, the Lady Rebels planned to protect the paint and limit fouls. They held the Rams to season-low scoring with just 20 points in the paint and 5 at the charity stripe.

"We didn't foul their shooters. Limiting them to only eight free throw attempts was huge."

Colorado State lived at the 3-point line and bucketed just 24 percent from beyond the arc.

Hofschild, the conference's scoring leader, was held to a single field goal in the second half. Destiny Thurman, who had scored 21 points per game the last six games, was held to 4.

While the Rams' stars struggled, UNLV's showed out. Essence Booker and Desi-Rae Young each had a double-double.

Booker scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.

"She's just getting better and better each and every game, which is just scary. She's got that look in her eye, that a senior does, that she's going to do whatever it takes."

Young added 11 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

UNLV led 36-30 at halftime. The Lady Rebels surged ahead in the third period, using a 9-2 run to separate for a lead they would carry to the final buzzer.

"We settled for a few too many outside shots early in the fourth quarter. But once we got back to attacking the basket, we finished strong."
