LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's swimming and diving team swept their quad meet with wins by scores of 227-114 over Wyoming, 182-151 over UC Santa Barbara and 226-119 over Hawai'i, as they wrapped up competition Saturday at Jim Reitz Pool. On the women's side, the Rebels fell to the Cowgirls, 188.50-164.50, the Rainbow Wahine, 214-136, and Gauchos, 172-168.
Across the two-day competition, the Rebel men's and women's teams combined to record 13 event wins and 54 top-5 finishes while going up against their trio of opponents.
REBELS OF THE MEET:
MEN
*Sophomore
Adnan Beji finished the meet unbeaten in the breaststroke events with his 100 breast (52.47) and 200 breast (1:56.90) wins. His 100 breast time ranks among the nation's top-30 marks this season.
*Super senior
Reece Hemmens won the 50 free (19.96), finished third in the 100 free (44.27) and contributed to the Rebel 'A' teams' perfect 4-0 meet in the men's relay events.
WOMEN
*Junior
Blanka Bokros ended the weekend 2-0 in the butterfly events, winning the 100 fly (53.97) and 200 fly (1:57.11).
*Junior
Vika Yanovska dove her way to a pair of top-2 finishes, placing first on the 3-meter springboard (314.30) and second in the 1-meter (267.75) event.
THE RUNDOWN – MEN
*The highlight of the day on the men's side, sophomore
Adnan Beji dropped his personal-best time during his 100 breast victory. The time drop moved him up one spot into second all-time at UNLV with an NCAA 'B' mark of 52.47 seconds.
*In the meet finale, Beji also glided his way to first place in the 200 breast with a time of 1:56.90. Sophomore Mike Breitbart (2:02.01) tagged a couple spaces behind in fourth place.
*Junior
George Ratiu sprinted to a time of 43.80 seconds to claim the win in the 100 free. His Rebel teammates in Hemmens (44.27), freshman Kris Matuszewski (44.67) and senior
Steven Butler (44.72) placed third through fifth, respectively, in the event.
*Supplying a 1-2 finish in the 50 free, Hemmens (19.96) placed first and sophomore
Bryson Huey (20.06) claimed second place. Butler rounded out the top-5 with a time of 20.63 seconds.
*In the 200 free, Matuszewski found himself ahead of the pack in first place with a time of 1:36.64, while freshman
Zsolt Szodi (1:39.04) followed two places behind in fourth.
*Senior
Panos Bolanos backstroked into another Rebel first-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:43.87. The Athens, Greece native also put forth a season-best time of 1:47.24 on the way to finishing second in the 200 fly.
*In the 200 IM, sophomore Domik Bujak chimed in with a third-place finish after he swam a time of 1:49.22. Bujak paired that with a fifth-place finish (3:57.13) in the 400 IM.
*Coming in fifth place in the 100 back, Huey finished with a time of 50.14 seconds.
*Senior Cam Castro (15:42.51) swam his way to a third-place finish in the 1650 free.
*Assisting the Rebels with their 100 fly swims, Ratiu (48.04) and freshman
Charley Page-Jones (48.43) took third and fifth, respectively.
*On the diving side, sophomore
Dima Tereshchenko had two third-place finishes across the men's 1-meter (309.35) and 3-meter (338.85) events.
*In a twin relay victory on day one, the Rebel 'A' team (Bolanos, Beji, Ratu, Hemmens) won the 400 medley relay (3:09.40) and the Scarlet & Gray 'A' quartet (Hemmens, Butler, Ratiu, Huey) finished first in the 200 free relay (1:19.14). UNLV's B relay teams added fourth-place finishes in both the 400 medley relay (Mickelson, Breitbart, Page-Jones, Matuszewski) with a time of 3:17.59 and the 200 free relay with a time of 1:21.58.
*The Rebel 'A' team (Bolanos, Beji, Navarro, Hemmens) started off the second day of competition with a 200 medley relay victory (1:26.09). They were joined in the top 5 by UNLV's 'B' squad (Huey, Breitbart, Page-Jones, Butler) in fourth place (1:29.48).
*Following their other strong relay finishes, the Rebels went 1-2 in the 400 free relay as their 'A' team (Matuszewski, Hemmens, Ratiu, Butler) emerged in first (2:55.27) after a tight battle with the 'B' squad (Bolanos, Szodi, Esenwein, Huey) in a close second place (2:55.64).
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN
*Starring for the Rebel women, Bokros claimed a first-place finish in the 200 fly (1:57.11) and had the fastest time as she exhibitioned the 200 IM. She posted a personal-best time in the 200 fly to remain at second all-time in UNLV program history.
*Additonally, Bokros enjoyed a season-best time of 53.97 seconds in the 100 fly for her second and final victory of the weekend. Her sophomore counterpart Cameron Mykkannen (56.52) placed fifth in the event.
*Diving her way to victory in the women's diving events, junior
Vika Yanovska finished first on the 3-meter springboard behind a score of 314.30 and added a second-place finish (267.75) on the 1-meter springboard. She slipped into fifth place on UNLV's all-time top-scores list for the 3-meter event.
*Notching another Scarlet & Gray swimming win, junior
Ruby Howell clocked in with a 2:03.23 in the 200 IM.
*The 1650 free featured three Rebel top-5 finishes as freshman
Hannah Jones (16:49.96), freshman
Chloe Wendlandt (16:54.16) and super senior
Teneka Ash (17:01.48) finished second, third and fifth, respectively.
*Super senior
Gabby Lizzul was the second of two UNLV swimmers among the top-5 finishers in the 200 fly, finishing fourth with a time of 2:02.97.
*Pacing the Rebels in the 100 breast, junior
Tosia Iwanowska swam a 1:02.94 for a fifth-place finish.
*Freshman
Erika Carlson's time of 51.37 seconds in the 100 free gave the Scarlet & Gray another top-5 finish as she took fifth.
*In the 500 free, Carlson (4:57.06), freshman
Kayleigh Lovell (4:58.28) and Ash (4:59.64) led UNLV in third through fifth, respectively.
*Sophomore
Pilar Cohen sped her way to a third-place finish in the 50 free (23.52).
*The 400 IM saw Lizzul (4:27.13)and Howell (4:29.09) power their way to respective third-place and fifth-place finishes.
*In the opening day relay events, UNLV's 'A' squad (Mykkannen, Bartlett, Bokros, Sullivan) finished fifth (3:46.35) in the 400 medley relay and the Rebel 'A' team (Cohen, Webb, Klimek, Sullivan) in the 200 free relay finished third (1:34.02).
*On the final day of the meet, the Rebel 'A' quartet (Webb, Bartlett, Bokros, Cohen) finished fifth (1:43.59) in the 200 medley relay.
*Wrapping up the meet with two fifth-place finishes in the 400 free relay, UNLV's 'A' team (Carlson, Sullivan, Klimek, Cohen) took fourth (3:26.71) and its 'B' squad (Webb, Bokros, Fernandez, Lovell) placed fifth (3:27.31).
