LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's soccer team capped its weekend of home games with a 1-1 draw vs. Utah Valley on Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Both teams notched goals in the first half as the Rebels (5-5-3, 3-1-1) found the 29th-minute equalizer in response to the Wolverines' (2-6-5, 1-2-2) opening score in the third minute.
Following a UVU score by Alex Fritcher on a free kick, freshman
Mikah Madrid put the Scarlet & Gray on the board on a set piece of their own. The game-tying goal directly followed a shot on the free kick taken by
Nico Lopez and deflected to Madrid, who immediately slapped the ball from 20 yards out and chipped it off the crossbar with just enough spin to roll into the back of the net.
Freshman goalkeeper
Hugo Lemos and his backline teammates played stalward defense for the Rebels in a clean second half. Lemos made five saves in the final 45 minutes alone to finish the match with a career-high seven saves against the eight shots on goal from the Wolverines.
The Scarlet & Gray put together a handful of shots in the final five minutes of the match in search of a go-ahead score. Senior
Louis Hiepen moved his scoring opportunity wide left in the 87th minute and Lucas Gelebart had his attempt from within the box sail over the top just 90 seconds later before the score remained equal at the final whistle moments later.
UP NEXT: After earning another point in the WAC standings, the Rebels now look ahead to their game at Cal Baptist on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT to kick off a set of road games next weekend.
NOTES:
- This was the fifth time Lemos recorded at least six saves this year after he reached six stops in each of his first four outings this season.
- Madrid becomes UNLV's seventh player to net his first career goal during the 2023 campaign. He joins seniors Brophy Howard and Theo Minard, junior Cesar Carbajal, as well as fellow freshmen Kai Merrill, Hermann Ragnarsson, Tyler Ware and Bryce Allred in that group.
