PHOENIX (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's soccer team was topped by Grand Canyon, 1-0, in its tight final road game of the season Sunday evening at GCU Stadium.
The final outcome against the Lopes (7-6-2, 2-3-1) halted the Rebels' (5-6-4, 3-2-2) five-match unbeaten streak, which marked the program's longest stretch without a loss since 2016.
Battling a one-goal deficit, the Scarlet & Gray attack created a number of scoring opportunities during the final 20 minutes of the game before the final whistle. Among those moments,
Mikah Madrid rocketed a deflected ball from just inside the box that was poked away at the last second in the 73rd minute,
Jonah Craig nearly connected on a free kick for a
Tyler Ware goal called back on an offside flag in the 83rd minute and senior
Brophy Howard's threatening header in the final minute barely missed right.
Keeping UNLV in the match with a series of monstrous stops, freshman
Hugo Lemos matched his career-high in saves with seven for the second time. The shots diverted by Lemos gave him seven outings with six or more saves on the year.
QUOTABLE: "It was a great game. I'm so proud of this team and the way they compete every game. Games ebb and flow and you have to handle adversity on the road, and our players never gave in. In the end, we were pushing the game our way with some really good attacks and just ran out of time."
-UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig
