Rebels Take Down Air Force In 3-1 Victory

UNLV’s double-digit blocks and 38.5-percent hitting percentage pushed the Rebels over the Mountain West-leading Air Force Falcons.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVrebels.com) – Despite falling 4-0 early in the fourth set, the UNLV volleyball team (12-6, 4-2 Mountain West) responded with a 6-1 run thereafter and held the lead the rest of the way to close out the match 3-1 over Air Force on Saturday afternoon in Cox Pavilion in a strong victory.
 
The Rebels picked up the win by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 24-26 and 25-17.
 
UNLV picked up a handful of season-high and career-highs in the match, junior Madi Kelly tabbed a career-high 12 kills to be one of three Rebels to own double-digits in the statistical category. Chloe Thomas earned a season-high of her own in kills (13) and Isabel Martin led the team in that specific line of the box score (19). UNLV hit 38.5-percent overall in the match with 56 total kills as a team.
   
The Rebels' looks at the attack came way of 52 team assists in the match with Arien Fafard heading the team on 27. The senior's latest game marked nine times this season of recording 25 assists or more in a single match. The team also found 21 assists from Jenna Howard, the redshirt junior eclipsing her career-high of 18 that she hit twice earlier in the season.
 
UNLV's defense also held a strong presence in the match with 11 blocks on the front, Jordyn Freeman surpassing her season-high in blocks with seven block assists. The Rebels also recorded 39 digs overall in the match, the team leader being Livvy Setla with nine and Kelly right behind her at seven. The team also nailed 10 service aces, the third time this season that it reached double-digits aces in a single game.
 
The Falcons were led by Ella Tschuor and Joi Harvey with 13 and 12 kills each in the game, respectively. Air Force had a team hitting percentage of 15.8-percent overall with 30 total errors between attacking (27) and setting (2). Jordan Suan each had 9 digs to lead the Falcons in the statistical category, the team recorded 34 overall in the game.
 
The Rebels now move up to 47-5 in the all-time head-to-head record over the Falcons.
 
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will take the road next weekend as they close in on the halfway point of conference play with their next match being University of Nevada, Reno. They'll take on the Wolfpack on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 6:00 p.m. PT before moving northwest to Fresno State on Saturday, Oct. 14.
