Late Goals Lift Women's Soccer Over Colorado College

UNLV receives 60th-minute equalizer from Trinity Buchanan and 84th-minute game-winner from Cassie Villanueva

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) – Two second-half goals in the final 30 minutes of action lifted the UNLV women's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback win over Colorado College in Mountain West action Sunday at Stewart Field.

The Rebels (6-4-5, 2-2-2) received goals from their freshman duo of Trinity Buchanan and Cassie Villanueva as they overcame a one-goal deficit to earn the three points against the Tigers (2-10-1, 2-4-0).

After a Colorado College red card gave the Scarlet & Gray a one-player advantage for the final 13 minutes, Villanueva rebounded a loose ball amid a scramble in the box to put away the game-winning goal in the 84th minute. It was her third game-winner of the season and fourth goal overall.

Following the first score of the game by the Tigers in the 49th minute, Buchanan provided UNLV's  equalizer in the 60th minute. Her team-high-tying fifth goal of the year came as she tracked down her shot that was saved by Colorado College's Regan Wallace and sent the ball into the net from 12 yards out.

Playing the bulk of the match at goalkeeper for the Rebels, junior Lucia Guemes picked up her fourth win behind a five-save afternoon in 76 minutes. Despite a near-goal scare from the Tigers on a 63rd-minute shot that was called back on a collision involving her UNLV counterpart Hanne Breur, the Scarlet & Gray backline remained unscathed during the final 41 minutes of the contest.

UP NEXT: The Rebels come home for a pair of doubleheaders with men's soccer next week, starting with a match Thursday at 6 p.m. vs. Mountain West front-runner San Diego State. A pregame tailgate with free food and drinks will be hosted by the UNLV Soccer Foundation prior to both matches.

NEWS & NOTES:
  • UNLV ended a season-long three-game goal scoring drought with its two second-half goals.
  • This marked the fourth come-from-behind win for the Rebels of the 2023 campaign.
