LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV football's touchdown explosion in a 56-14 win at New Mexico this weekend also produced two more individual honors for the program as wide receiver Ricky White III was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week while quarterback Jayden Maiava was tabbed MW Freshman of the Week for a third time, the league announced Monday.
White, a former Michigan State transfer from Marietta, Georgia, has been on a receiving tear of late. His 165 yards on eight receptions vs. the Lobos Saturday included two long touchdowns to give him six scores in the last four games. He grabbed a 30-yard TD on his team's first play on offense and then hauled in a 58-yarder in the third quarter before sitting out much of the second half after the score reached 49-7. The first UNLV player to earn the offensive honor this season, White now leads the conference with 98.2 yards per game through the air, which ranks 11th in the nation. The junior needs just 116 more yards to become the program's first 1,000-yard receiver since 2013.
Maiava is just the second player to win more than two MW Freshman of the Week honors, which were first awarded in 2020. Only Boise State quarterback Taylen Green has more as he won four times during his rookie season last fall.
A graduate of local power program Liberty High School, Maiava (my-AH-vah) improved to 5-1 as a starter by throwing for 247 yards and a career-high three touchdowns on 13-of-18 passing with zero turnovers or sacks. He went a perfect 5-for-5 passing on third downs vs. the Lobos and ranks second nationally among freshmen with a completion percentage of 64.9 this fall. He also won the league freshman honor on September 18 and October 23.
UNLV (7-2/4-1), which has already clinched a winning record for the first time since 2013 and is receiving votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll, next hosts Wyoming on Friday night in a key conference clash. Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. and tickets are on sale by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting unlvtickets.com.
