LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams cruised to a sweep of their annual UNLV Invitational at Jim Reitz Pool against eight other programs over the weekend.
The Rebel men won by a wide margin after they tallied 1,065.5 points for a 284.5 advantage over the second-place finisher Hawai'i with 781 points. In similar fashion, the Scarlet & Gray women's 1,012 points gave them a 142-point cushion for the victory ahead of the Rainbow Wahine (870) in second place.
On Tuesday's final day of the meet, the Scarlet & Gray jetted to three individual event sweeps and five event wins.
Also competing against the Rebels were Arizona, California Baptist, Colorado Mesa, LMU's women, New Mexico's women, Pacific and Seattle. Out of that group, the Arizona men's squad, which ranks No. 18 in the latest CSCAA Top-25 poll, sent swimmers to the four-day meet.
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
*Leading off the Rebel 1-2-3 sweeps on the day,
Hannah Jones (16:46.83) won the 1650 free, with freshman
Ava Olson (16:49.03) and junior
Gina Miller (16:49.74) finishing second and third, respectively. Olson's mark moved her into 10th on the program record chart.
*In the 200 fly, junior
Cameron Mykkanen (2:00.07) brought home another victory with the fifth-fastest time in program history.
*Sophomore
Erika Carlson (49.68) finished her unbeaten weekend in a tie for first in the 100 free.
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
*Junior
Adnan Beji (1:56.41) kept the Scarlet & Gray momentum going in the 200 breast with his victory to pace another 1-2-3 sweep. Freshman
Nate Thomason (1:59.54) and junior Mike Breitbart (1:59.73) followed Beji in second and third, respectively.
*Giving the Rebels a sweep of the men's 200 fly, redshirt freshman
Colby Raffel recorded the school's all-time sixth-best mark for the victory. Right behind Raffel were freshman
Wyatt Miner (1:48.94) in second and senior
McKay Mickelson (1:49.22) in third.
