LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's basketball team closed out the 2023 calendar year with an 87-51 victory over Carroll College Sunday afternoon at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Five players scored in double figures for UNLV (6-5), led by Justin Webster's 16 points on 6 of 10 from the field, including 4 of 8 on 3-pointers. Kalib Boone had 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting, with four rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Luis Rodriguez and Jackie Johnson III each scored 12, while Rob Whaley Jr. added 11. Dedan Thomas Jr. dished out 10 assists against only two turnovers and Keylan Boone, Luis Rodriguez and Rob Whaley Jr. all led UNLV in rebounds with six.
Carroll, which is a NAIA school located in Helena, Montana, was led by Kendall Moore's 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including 2 of 2 on 3-pointers. Zane Foster led his team in rebounding with six and blocks with four. It was just the second game for the Fighting Saints against a NCAA Division I opponent this season.
THE TURNING POINT: With the score tied at 9-9 eight minutes into the contest, UNLV used a 15-0 run to take a 24-9 lead with six minutes to go until halftime. The Runnin' Rebels led 42-20 at the break.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's five players that scored in double figures combined to shoot 62.8% from the field: Webster (6-10), Boone (7-11), Johnson III (4-6), Rodriguez (5-8), Whaley Jr. (5-8).
OTHER NOTES:
- It was UNLV's first game in 10 days.
- UNLV held Carroll to just 29.6% shooting in the first half (8 of 27) and 30.5% for the game (18 of 59), including 5 of 17 on 3-pointers (29.4%).
- UNLV shot 50% from the field in the first half (17 of 34), finishing the game at 47.9% (34 of 71), including 40% on 3-pointers (10 of 25).
- UNLV made 16 more shots than Carroll over the course of the game.
- UNLV forced Carroll into 25 turnovers.
- UNLV recorded 24 assists on 34 makes for the game.
- UNLV had 15 steals and only 10 turnovers.
- UNLV led in points in the paint 46-20, fastbreak points 21-4 and bench scoring 40-11.
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,204 straight games.
