Rebels Split Season-Opening Contests

UNLV run rules Southern Utah, falls to No. 7 Arkansas

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV softball split its doubleheader on opening day at the Rebel Kickoff tasting both sides of run-rule contests Friday night.

The Rebels started the season with a 13-3 six-inning victory over Southern Utah before falling to No. 7 Arkansas 11-0 in five innings.

UNLV (1-1) returns to Eller Media Stadium Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. start against Weber State before playing a rematch of the 2022 National Invitational Softball Championship Game against Baylor at 7 p.m.

Game One: UNLV 13, Southern Utah 3 (6)

Ariana Martinez batted 3-for-3 with a walk in four plate appearances as UNLV run-ruled Southern Utah, 13-3, in six innings in its season opener.

After four Rebels reached on walks in the sixth, Ellie Zellien plated the final three runs with a single up the middle to clinch the game. Zellien finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored in her UNLV debut.

After falling behind one run, Denise Armendariz and Martinez batted in three runs with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first. Zellien homered in the second for a 4-1 cushion.

Southern Utah's Madison Sanders homered in the fourth to close the deficit to 4-3, but the Rebels' offense was just too much to contain.

UNLV's Jasmine Martin (1-0) earned the win and Alanna Thiede took the save after finishing with 2 â…“ scoreless innings.

Game Two: Arkansas 11, UNLV 0 (5)

All-American and 2022 SEC Pitcher of the Year Chenise Delci threw a complete game shutout as No. 7 Arkansas run-ruled UNLV 11-0 in five innings.

Arkansas' Cylie Halvorson hit a three-run home run in the second inning as the Razorbacks scored at least one run in each of the first four frames.

Delce struck out five Rebels and allowed just three hits and two walks over 5.0 innings.
