Martin Powers Rebel Run-Rule Over Weber State

UNLV beats Weber State, falls to Southern Utah Sunday at Rebel Kickoff

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV split its two games Sunday in the final contests of the season-opening Rebel Kickoff at Eller Media Stadium.

UNLV (2-4) run-ruled Weber State, 12-4, in six innings before its rally against Southern Utah came up short, 6-4.

The Rebels next host CSU Bakersfield, Hawaii and Montana in the UNLV Desert Classic starting Friday, Feb. 17.

Game One: UNLV 12, Weber State 4 (6 innings)
Jasmine Martin led the offense and defense as UNLV used a nine-run sixth to rally past Weber State, 12-4.

Martin's single to right field drove in the game-tying run. She then scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error before the Rebels finished off the Wildcats (1-4) with five straight hits.

Martin (2-0) pitched a complete-game victory in the circle, striking out two and allowing six hits. Weber State grabbed a 4-0 advantage but after putting one run across in the third, Martin retired 11 of the next 12 batters.

Ariana Martinez cleared the bases three batters later with a 3-run home run. Then April Visser batted in Janyssa Martin for a walk-off single.

Visser batted 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Maddie Schmidt was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Game Two: Southern Utah 6, UNLV 4
Southern Utah (1-4) scored four two-out runs to beat the Rebels, 6-4, in the final game of UNLV's weekend tournament.

UNLV shortstop Kelsie Kelso slugged her first collegiate home run to lead off the sixth inning as the Rebels appeared to have a late-inning rally in the works. Fighting a headwind, Kelso tracked an opposite-field shot over the right-center fence. Catcher Hailey Schmaltz pounded the left-center fence for an RBI triple to cut the Thunderbirds' lead to 3.

In the seventh, Denise Armendariz landed an RBI single into right field. But SUU reliever Riley Neilson struck out UNLV's batters for the final two outs.

Armendariz and Martinez led the Rebels' offense over the weekend. Armendariz was 6-for-16 (.375) at the plate with a team-high six RBIs. Martinez batted 7-for-16 (.438) with two home runs and five RBIs.
