LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) —
Janyssa Martin became the sixth Rebel to homer this season as the junior centerfielder smacked the first of big hits UNLV delivered as it split its doubleheader.
UNLV (3-5) run-ruled Cal State Bakersfield, 8-0, before falling to Hawaii, 12-2, in six innings on Friday, the first day of the UNLV Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium.
In other games of the invitational, Cal State Bakersfield outlasted Montana, 3-2, after nine innings and Hawaii run-ruled Montana, 10-1, in five innings.
UNLV returns to the field Saturday for a 3 p.m. rematch against Hawaii before a 6 p.m. scheduled first pitch against Montana.
Game One: UNLV 8, Cal State Bakersfield 0
Janyssa Martin's solo home run in the second inning was enough, but not the end of UNLV's 8-0 run-rule victory over Cal State Bakersfield (1-6).
Arizona transfer
Jessie Fontes (1-1) threw a five-inning shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks, as the Rebels' offense overpowered the Roadrunners.
UNLV added five runs in the third inning.
Ariana Martinez blasted her third home run of the season, scoring
Maddie Schmidt. Four batters later,
Sofia Morales knocked in
Denise Armendariz with a single and
Ellie Zellien's double in the next at-bat drove in two more Rebels.
Armendariz batted in pinch-runner
Alexys Herrera in the fourth. And the Rebels closed the game on Martinez's bases-loaded walk in the fifth.
Game Two: Hawaii 12, UNLV 2
Hawaii (5-3) scored 12 unanswered runs to run-rule the Rebels and complete an undefeated Friday at the UNLV Desert Classic.
UNLV struck first when freshman shortstop Kelsi Kelso batted in
Janyssa Martin and Armendariz on a seeing-eye single to right field. But Hawaii ace Key-an Campbell-Pua found her footing and retired the 16 of the next 18 batters.
After evening the score in the third, the Rainbow Wahine added four runs in the fourth and six in the sixth to seal their victory.
