Rebels Slug Two Victories Saturday

UNLV gets revenge on Hawaii, clobbers Montana on Desert Classic Day Two

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — April Visser was 5-for-6 at the plate with five runs batted in as the Rebels took two wins on Saturday at the UNLV Desert Classic.

UNLV (5-5) took revenge on Hawaii with a 5-4 victory after falling to the Rainbow Wahine on Friday. Then the Rebels run-ruled Montana in six innings to sweep the day's doubleheader at Eller Media Stadium.

Earlier in the day, Hawaii defeated CSU Bakersfield 14-6 in six innings and CSU Bakersfield topped Montana 7-3.

UNLV closes the Desert Classic Sunday at 12 p.m. facing CSU Bakersfield. The penultimate game pits Hawaii against Montana at 9:30 a.m.

Game One: UNLV 5, Hawaii 4

Ariana Martinez blasted a 3-run home run in the first inning as UNLV took an early advantage and held off Hawaii, 5-4.

UNLV's leadoff trio all touched the plate after Martinez's big swing. Hawaii's Rachel Sabourin tied the score with her own 3-run shot in the top of the second.

Visser plated Skyler Shaw with an RBI single in the fourth. Then Denise Armendariz slugged a solo homer in the fifth to build a cushion for Jessie Fontes (2-1) to close the final five innings with just one earned run.

Game Two: UNLV 14, Montana 6 (6 innings)

A 10-run third inning subdued the Grizzlies as Visser popped her second home run of the season in UNLV's 14-6 run-rule victory.

Visser batted 3-for-3 with four RBIs off two doubles and her home run that gave the Rebels an 8-run lead.

Freshman Bri Williams cast a two-out single into right that scored two and capped the inning with UNLV leading 12-1.

Montana's Grace Hardy drove in five runs over the next two innings, but the Grizzlies defense surrendered a bunt single and two hit batters, including Maddie Schmidt's walk-off hit-by-pitch, in the fifth.

Armendariz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the contest.
