LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV split two games on Sunday to finish the Trailblazer Tournament in St. George, Utah, with three wins and two losses.
UNLV (13-7) defeated Portland State, 4-1, this morning before falling to Utah State, 2-1, in the afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.
The Rebels finish their pre-conference schedule on the road in Washington. UNLV will play four games—two each against Seattle U and Montana—this weekend in Seattle before visiting No. 11 Washington for a single game on Tuesday, March 14.
Game One: UNLV 4, Portland State 1
The top of UNLV's lineup batted in two runs and scored two more as the Rebels cruised by Portland State, 4-1.
Maddie Schmidt and
Sofia Morales, Nos. 1 and 2 in the order, each hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.Â
Ariana Martinez hit an RBI single down the right field line to score Morales in the bottom of the third.
Denise Armendariz then scored when Portland State attempted to throw out
Skyler Shaw, pinch running for Martinez, stealing second.
Ellie Zellien and
Maddie Schmidt hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth, the latter bring home Zellien. Morales then singled up the middle to plate Schmidt.
Zellien (3-1) threw 10 strikeouts as she went the duration allowing just two hits.
Game Two: Utah Tech 2, UNLV 1
Utah Tech's Shea Clements hit a two-out walk-off double to score Lauren Almedia and earn a 2-1 win over UNLV.
Hailey Schmaltz hit her second home run in as many days to give the Rebels the early advantage. But UNLV struggled to put runners on base against Sauron Garton, who gave up just four hits and did not allow a walk.
The Trailblazers rallied with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
