LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Cal used a three-run seventh inning to rally past UNLV 7-5 Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.
The Rebels (19-22) watched a four-run lead evaporate over the final three innings. Cal took advantage of five bunt singles–two in the sixth and three in the seventh–that scored runs and extended the innings for further RBIs.
Back-to-back walks to lead off the sixth allowed the Bears to loaded the bases and then score on consecutive bunts. Tatum Anzaldo then reached base on an RBI walk.
In the seventh, Elon Butler's bunt single scored Makena Smith from second. Kennedy Smith struck a two-RBI double as Cal's first six batters reached base.
Skyler Shaw batted 2-for-4 with a career-high three RBIs. Shaw tripled in the second inning to plate
April Visser for UNLV's first score. She hit a two-RBI single to right field in the third inning to supply UNLV's early 5-1 lead.
The Rebels were unlucky after Cal cut the deficit to 1. In the bottom of the sixth,
Ariana Martinez's long fly single was just inches short of escaping the ball park.
Denise Armendariz's bloop to right field caught the glove of second baseman Butler, who recovered in time to force the third out at first.
UNLV returns to conference play next weekend hosting San Jose State. Friday's first pitch is 6 p.m. All games of the series will be broadcast live locally on the Silver State Sports and Entertainment Network (KVVU 5.2 / Cox 125) and streamed on the Mountain West Network.
