LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — San Jose State shut out UNLV 6-0 in Friday's series opener at Eller Media Stadium.
The Spartans took advantage of early-inning baserunners to grab a 2-0 lead before a pitcher's duel became the fixture of the middle innings.
SJSU (20-23 overall, 8-9 Mountain West) halted the stalemate with a four-run sixth inning.
UNLV (19-24, 5-10) was 0-for-11 with runners on base.Â
Spartan third baseman Ashley Graham used a leadoff walk to reach base in the top of the first. She stole second and third ahead of a timely two-out single to right field by Adrianna Noriega.
Noriega's sister, Ahmiya, walked, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before Karizma Bergesen doubled to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead after two innings.
Alanna Thiede (4-7) struck out three in her three-inning start but the two early scores put her on the hook for the loss.
All six Spartan runs crossed the plate with two outs on the board. A passed ball allowed Ahmiya Noriega to score the first run of the sixth inning. Jenessa Ullegue followed with an RBI reached on error and then Reina Zermeno doubled to plate the final two runs.
UNLV and San Jose State meet for game two of three Saturday at 3 p.m.
