LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The Rebels scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium.
UNLV (20-24 overall, 6-10 Mountain West) defeated San Jose State (20-24, 8-10) 5-4 to even the weekend series.
Skyler Shaw, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, roped a leadoff single into left center.
Ariana Martinez followed with a line drive that split the right side.
Janyssa Martin was hit by a pitch. Then
April Visser plated Shaw with a hard grounder into the left gap that deflected off the diving shortstop.
The Spartans made a change in the circle after Visser's RBI, re-entering starter Jenessa Ullegue.
Sofia Morales sent Ullegue's first offering into shallow center field to score Martinez and Martin–the game-tying and game-winning runs.
The Rebels counted four of their eight hits in the final frame.
The victory ended a seven-game losing streak, the longest for the Rebels under head coach
Kristie Fox. The win keeps UNLV in control of its own destiny to finish in the top six of the conference standings and qualify for the Mountain West Championship Tournament.
The Spartans' four-run third inning almost spelled doom for the Rebels. After a leadoff flyout, San Jose State batted through the order assisted by three walks and a hit batter. But the Rebels shut down the Spartans' offense after the early outburst.
Maddie Schmidt turned a two-out walk into UNLV's first run in the bottom of the third. Schmidt stole second and raced home on
Skyler Shaw's single up the middle.
In the sixth,
Alyssa Trejo drew a full-count, two-out, bases-loaded, pinch-hit walk to provide a critical RBI.
UNLV and SJSU finish the three-game series Sunday at noon.
