LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV fell 7-3 to San Jose State Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium.
UNLV's (20-25 overall, 6-11 Mountain West) chance at last-minute heroics for a second straight day collapsed when the Spartans' defense withstood the power portion of the Rebels' lineup in the final frame.
Karizma Bergeson roped a two-out RBI single through the middle in the second inning and bashed a two-run homer in the third as the Spartans seized a 7-0 lead.
Following a 1-for-7 start, UNLV answered in the bottom of the third.
April Visser hit a moonshot over left field to match the three runs put up by SJSU in the top half of the inning.
The Spartans ditched starter Lacie Ham for ace Jenessa Ullegue (W, 12-7), who allowed three hits in four shutout innings.
UNLV was scoreless in 11 innings against Ullegue this weekend.
Alanna Thiede frustrated the Spartans in five innings of relief, but the deficit proved too great for the Rebels to overcome.
UNLV just missed run-scoring opportunities in the bottom of the sixth.
Denise Armendariz's leadoff line drive hung in the air long enough for center fielder Adrianna Noriega to dive and scoop. Kelsi Kelso's line drive to left-center was snagged at the last moment by the outstretched glove of right fielder Ashley Rico.Â
The Rebels reset in the final frame with their power hitters at the top of the order. But after an Arianna Martinez bloop single, UNLV went down in order on two pop-outs and a groundout.
UNLV faces its final road series of the regular season when it visits Utah State next weekend for a three-game series in Logan, Utah. Â
