LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team defeated New Mexico 8-3 to secure the Mountain West weekend series Sunday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels improved to 19-26 and 10-14 in the MW, while the Lobos dropped to 24-19 and 11-12 in league play.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Center fielder Rylan Charles went 3-for-4 at the plate with his fourth triple of the season, two RBIs and two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Scarlet & Gray took an early lead, plating two runs in the first inning with an RBI single from Jacob Sharp followed by a sacrifice fly from Edarian Williams. UNLV increased its advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Paul Myro. UNM answered in the top of the fifth with a solo home run from Justin Olson followed by an RBI single from Lenny Junior Ashby to bring it within one, but an RBI single from Charles in the bottom of the frame put the Rebels back up two. The Lobos plated one more run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single from Ashby.
TURNING POINT: The Rebels blew the game open by scoring four runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh, including an RBI triple from Charles and an RBI double from Williams.
Zack Simon (3-1) secured the win for UNLV after throwing a season-high 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits.
Reese Lueck (S,1) earned his first career save after throwing 2.1 innings of relief and only allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
Isaac Gallegos (4-2) was saddled with the loss for UNM after allowing four runs on six hits in six innings of work.
