Camp Spotlight: A "New" DJ On The Las Vegas Strip

UNLV's Darius Johnson solidified himself as a leader on the defensive line with a late-season emergence last fall. Going into his second year with the Rebels, Johnson continues his ascension under a brand-new staff led by head coach Barry Odom.

The Spokane, Washington, product started his collegiate career with Garden City Community College in Kansas before transferring to Las Vegas. In Johnson's first season with the Rebels, he appeared in 11 games, slowly earning additional playing time and starting five of the last six outings. He finished eighth on the team with 47 total tackles, including two QB sacks and a breakout performance vs. Air Force that included a career-best 16 takedowns.

Johnson was recently asked how his leadership has evolved going into year two.

"I think I've gained some respect from the guys who have been in the room since last year." said Johnson "Last year I came in not starting immediately, found some playing time and then eventually became a starter. Coming into this year I'm a lot closer with all the guys and just earning their respect and trust on the field."

Johnson said the entire defensive line group has shown progress and development during camp.

"I think we're holding together really well," he said. "This defensive line has gotten super close. There's no selfish players and I think we're progressing really well in total."

First-year UNLV defensive line coach Ricky Logo was asked what he's seen out of Johnson during camp.

"Darius Johnson not only brings experience, but he also brings leadership," said Logo. "Having Darius and the other guys here has made my transition a lot simpler, it really allows me to be a football coach rather than being a principal. Darius brings leadership in our group, and he holds those standards to make sure the guys are doing the right things. I tell him if you can do that off the field, I can trust you to do the right things on the field."
