Rebels, Hatters Battle To Draw

Stetson escapes Las Vegas even after 85th-minute goal

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The first-ever meeting between UNLV and Stetson in men's soccer ended in a stalemate Sunday night at Peter Johann Memorial Stadium.

UNLV (1-3-1) and Stetson (2-2-2) remained tied 1-1 after 90 minutes ticked away.

The Rebels snapped the deadlock of a balanced game in the 70th minute. Gabe Sanchez threaded a forward pass through the Hatters' back line as speedy Icelander Hermann Ragnarsson broke away for a one-on-one attack. Ragnarsson's goal was the freshman's first collegiate score.

Stetson's ramped-up attack was thwarted until the 85th minute when a deflected pass landed in front of Luis Lara's left toe with only 20 yards of open space between him and the goal line. The senior forward booted a laser through the back of the net to even the score.

Stetson counted 13 shots while the Rebels tallied eight. UNLV goalkeeper Hugo Lemos had six saves at the final horn.

UNLV next hosts Gonzaga on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m.
