LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The Rebels unearthed a second-half goal and resisted a late barrage of shots to preserve their home-field unbeaten streak Thursday night.
UNLV (1-3-2) and Gonzaga (2-1-4) drew 1-1 after 90 minutes at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Gonzaga held an early advantage after scoring in the sixth minute. The Bulldogs rushed a free kick, allowing sophomore midfielder Robbie Mora to slip the Rebels' defense. Mora punted a shot aside
Hugo Lemos as the UNLV goalkeeper advanced to defend.Â
UNLV freshman forward Lucas Gelebart nearly scored the equalizer in the 38th minute but Gonzaga goalkeeper Wessel Sprangers deflected the shot on goal with the toe of his fully-extended left leg.
Yet it would be Lemos who organized a goalkeeping clinic in the second half. The freshman stoned Stefano Campisi's penalty kick try in the 48th minute and finished the game with six saves.
The Rebels broke through in the final third of the game. Junior defender
Cesar Carbajal booted an off-the-post free-kick rebound to even the score in the 62nd minute.Â
Gonzaga was held scoreless on seven shots following UNLV's equalizer. Lemos added to his highlight reel with three saves in the final five minutes against point-blank shots from a Bulldog blitz.
The result kept UNLV undefeated at home ahead of a key non-conference matchup against Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, Sept. 17. CSUB (3-1-2) will visit Las Vegas with a three-game winning streak in two after securing a 1-0 victory over Utah Tech tonight.
