LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – In a match much closer than the final score indicated, the UNLV volleyball team (10-4, 2-0) defeated San Jose State 3-0 in a Mountain West match Thursday night at Cox Pavilion.
With the 27-25, 25-23, 27-25 sweep that included 38 tie scores and 16 lead changes, the Rebels won their sixth straight match overall, improved to 2-0 in Mountain West play and defeated the Spartans for the seventh straight time at home.
Isabel Martin recorded a match-high 18 kills for the Rebels, hit a team-high .342 and had a team-high seven digs. Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos also was in double figures in kills for UNLV with 11, while Arien Fafard had a match-high 37 assists. Caleigh King had a match-high three service aces, while Jordyn Freeman contributed on four blocks.
San Jose State (9-5, 0-1) was led by Letizia Cammillucci's 13 kills, Brooke Slusser's 15 assists and Alessia Buffagni's 12 digs. Mari Lawton had six block assists.
UNLV out-hit SJSU .231 to .181 for the match and also led in kills (50-38) and assists (42-31). The Spartans led in service aces (6-4), digs (39-34) and blocks (13-5).
UNLV improved to 17-8 all-time against San Jose State and has won nine of the last 10 meetings overall with the Spartans.

UNLV, which has been named the preseason league favorite along with Utah State in a poll voted on by the conference's head coaches, added five new players to their 2023 roster.

2022 Mountain West Player of the Year Isabel Martin is back and was also named the 2023 Preseason MW Player of the Year.

Also returning are last season's all-conference honorees: senior outside hitter Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos and senior middle blocker Jordyn Freeman.

Martin also earned all-region honors last season and was named an honorable mention All-American.
- UNLV went 26-5 overall in 2022, including a 17-1 record in Mountain West play, and made another NCAA Tournament appearance.
